The new cache server uses the latest in high speed internet technology to get web pages at the highest speeds possible. Then it forwards those pages to you as fast as you can receive them.

The advantage is that once the cache server has obtained the web page, it stores the page so that if someone else requests it, the page can be delivered instantly.

Web cache servers offer noticable speed increases, which can be as high as 20%. Normally a speed increase of between 10%-15% is typical.

So how does this work?

California State University, Fresno and CVIP have a dedicated 10 Megabit/second pipe to the Internet through our backbone provider. This allows us to get web pages at the fastest speed we can, and then forward those pages to you as fast as you can receive them. If the page is stored locally on the server, then the server checks to see if the page has been updated, and then forwards it to you using as much cached data as possible.

We have over twenty gigabytes of space on our dedicated high speed server, enough to store millions of web pages.

In addition to the standard web caching server, CVIP and ITS have created a second web caching server with the SurfWatch[tm] filtering software installed.

The filter server provides all the benefits of the standard caching server, and also filters over 150,000 web sites which have deemed to contain sexually explicit, violence, hate speech, gambling or drugs/alcohol/tobacco content.

The filter server can be setup and used easily on it's own, providing full SurfWatch security, or it can be combined with NetNanny[tm], SurfWatch client, or many other filtering clients to offer an even more secure environment.

Our filter listings are updated on a daily basis, with new sites being added to the filter sets constantly.

While this protection does not guarantee to be fullproof, it will help protect you and your children from encountering many unsuitable areas of the Internet.

Finally, the filter server provides a seven gigabyte cache to store over a million web pages.
