A Home Page is like a book. A book where you are the author, editor, and publisher all rolled into one. This book will cost you nothing to publish, and will cost nothing for people to read. This book can be accessed from millions of places around the world, at any given time. Essentially a Home Page is a way of getting information of all types out to the world. Through a file called an "HTML Script," using a protocol known as "Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)," you create a simple text document that will be the backbone of the Home Page.

An HTML Script file is nothing more than a set of words, with set of instructions throughout the document. This document is then interpreted by a program called a "browser." Common browsers you may have heard of are Netscape, and Mosaic. Browsers are virtually the same, meaning they function in the same ways. All that is different is the type of machine they run on.

Finally, the secret to everyone being able to view your Home Page is really not that amazing at all. When you decide to make a Home Page, you will be given (if already don't have one) an e-mail account. In that account, a certain directory will be able to be accessed by the world. This may sound dangerous, like giving your password to everyone, however, it is quite different. The difference between giving someone your password and allowing them to access your Home Page is that YOU limit what they can and can't do. Basically, you are the only one that can alter things within your account; your password assures this. All anyone who is looking at your Home Page can do is just "look."

Why should I have a Home Page?

The reasons for having a personal Home Page range far and wide, but perhaps the most popular reason is that it is something worth knowing. No one knows for sure how fast the World Wide Web will grow, but one thing is for certain, Home Pages are growing by the thousands on a daily basis; they are here to stay.

How much space do I get for my pages?

Your account comes with 10 megabytes of disk space.

What should I have on a Home Page

What you should have on your Home Page is completely up to you. While there are many common ideas out there, there is no set formula. Usually your name, a little bit about yourself, a picture of yourself or your favorite things, and some links to other pages you like are standard. Refer to the CVIP HTML Help Page to view a template of simple Home Page.

Limitations on CVIP Support of Home Pages

While CVIP encourages its users to explore the benefits of the World Wide Web and HTML Publishing of your own Home Page, our resources are limited. Therefore, we cannot offer support from our Help Desk in regards to HTML matters. If you feel the matter is of a technical nature or that something is wrong with our equipment then call 278-1111. If you have any other questions please refer to the links on the CVIP HTML Help Page to sites around the Web.

Another factor you should remember is that account space is limited, thus the amount of information you can put in your Home Page account is limited. The space allotted to CVIP Customers is around 10 megabytes. This should be ample space to put several large JPEG or GIF picture files, any HTML Icons you might need and all of your text only HTML document files.
